I Wished I Had Given Him More

October 1, 2018

At the beginning of our lives we make plans about what we want to accomplish in the years to come.  Then as the years go by we wish we had done this or that.  Now is the time to take action if you want to change the future.

When I was Pastoring in Baraboo I was called to the hospital for an accident of one of my members.  When I got to the hospital I was taken in the emergency room and there on the table was one of my members who had a heart attack while he was driving and he died before they could get him to the hospital.

The doctor asked me to go with him to share the news with his wife. Mrs. Opperman was a senior member of my church and both her and her husband were wonderful people.  When the doctor approached Mrs. Opperman he told her they did all they could.  Mrs. Opperman thought he was saying that he was okay and he had just died.  I told her that he had gone to be with Jesus.  She hugged me and we both cried together.  She asked me to go with her to the funeral home the next day and I told her I would take her.

The next day we met with the funeral home and she made all the arrangements.  This was my first funeral of one of my members since I came to the church.  I had one other funeral before but it wasn’t a member. She asked me to have the funeral and a few days later we were standing before Mr. Opperman’s casket.

As we were standing there she said to me I wished I’d had more time.  I wasn’t ready for this to happen yet.  What she said gave me the thoughts I am going to share with you today.  I preached them in a sermon in Baraboo shortly after the funeral.

When we lose a loved one we will wished we had given them more but it is now too late.  Some day we will stand before God and I pray you won’t have to say I wished I had given my Lord more.

Please don’t wait and have to say those words.  Don’t wish you had given God more time reading His word the Bible and requesting things through prayer.

Don’t wait and have to say you wished you had given more of your talents to Him.  To serve Him in all the ways you could using your talents.

Don’t wait and have to say you wished you have given more of your tears for the lost sinners and your sins.  Please don’t wait!

Don’t wait and have to say you wished you had given more of your testimony in the church and the community.  Share your testimony with others now before it is too late.  Others need to hear what God has done for you.

Don’t wait and have to say you wished you had given more of your thanks for your church.  We sometimes aren’t thankful for what we have until we no longer have it.

Don’t wait and have to say you wished you had given more of your thoughts of being a faithful fruitful friend.  Be a friend to those around you and those brothers and sisters in Christ while there is still time.

Don’t wait and have to say you wished you had given more of your tithe that belonged to Him.  What we have we owe to Him and I pray that we don’t have regrets for what we didn’t do because it is too late.

I hope you will never have to say I wished I had given God more.  Give Him more now while you can.
