Blast Into My Past

The other day I was going over something that happened to me when I was a teenager.  I can’t really say how old I was but I am guessing I was around 12 or 13.

My Dad was the Pastor of a small church that was meeting in a store front building on Southport in Chicago, Illinois.  I remember the church was located next to a liquor store and the guy was very nice to us as he was afraid we would complain and get his store shutdown.

I am not sure who was the person who decided to work with the young people on Bible memorization but they set up a program that changed my life.  We made homemade crowns and we were given verses in the Bible to memorize.  Every time we memorized a verse we got to put a star on our crown.  We worked hard each week to learn new verses and fill our crown with stars.

At the conclusion of the year the boy with the most stars would be crowned King and the girl with most stars would be crowned Queen.  I can’t remember who the Queen was but I remembered that I was the King.  I memorized a lot of verses to win that title.  It is those verses that I have kept in my heart over the years.  Even today I can still quote many of these verses I learned way back then.

Many people have wondered how I memorized so many verses but I can say that it was this promotion way back when I was around 12 or 13 and we were learning Bible verses to get stars to be crowned King or Queen.

In going over in my mind I think Brenda Hawks was the Queen but I wouldn’t swear to it.  If any of my readers were there and you remember please remind me.

Thanks for reading my story that for me was a blast into my past.
