Forgetting The Past

The Bible teaches us in Philippians 3:13 "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before." What I think the scripture is teaching us is that if we are going to get anywhere we need to put the past behind us. We have wonderful memories of the past but we have to put them behind us if we are ever going to be able to move forward.

I remember in my past ministry hearing folks talk about what they did when they were a younger Christian. They use to witness for Christ, they use to teach Sunday school, they use to work in a bus ministry, and so on. When they don't let go of that past they can't move on in the present.

I remember a time when I was at the church in Baraboo, Wisconsin. We had Dr. Jim Delashmit as our evangelist in a revival. During the revival we had a high attendance of 242 on that one night. We had to sit chairs out in the aisle and we had folks standing in the back and we had many leave because there wasn't room. Several years later I heard a member talking to someone new in the church about that time and how packed out we were. The memory was great but he couldn't let go of it and he had a hard time seeing into the future.

Yes, there are good memories and we can remember them but we have to let them go so we can reach into the future. We can brag until our teeth fall out but if we don't put the past behind us we will never get to the future.

The same goes for our life as a Christian servant. We may have accomplished some wonderful stuff years ago but that isn't going to help us today. What is going to help us today is the put our sights on the future and shooting for the stars.

Just before I resigned Pleasant View I spent several months sharing what we need to do if we were going to revive our Church. Many were still holding on to the past and some went so fair as to convince themselves that they couldn't do better than what they had done before. They gave up and when they did they never made it into the future.

God will help us if we will put our trust in Him and allow Him to work the miracles. We can't do it on our own and so we have to trust Him to bring us through. If we don't trust Him we will fail and we can't be successful without Him.

Thanks for allowing me to share I hope something I have written will encourage you and help you in your Christian walk.
